Are you Sure?
Updated: Jul 16, 2019
Certainty is an important part of becoming aware. If we are to know that the information we ae receiving is true for us, being certain is key. I’ve been thinking about certainty and why I don’t always know what information is true for me. My nephews were visiting this past summer and we were going to go clothes shopping. They told me we want jeans and shoes, very clear. I asked, do you need anything else? No, they replied. Are you sure? Over the course of the day I asked them 2 or 3 times if they were sure that they didn’t need anything else. They did not!
I started to think about this and how invalidating the question is. If I know what I want, or another example, if I know the choice that is right for me, and a parent or adult questions that, eventually I will begin to question myself. My nephews have been such a huge learning opportunity about my unconscious patterns and programming – I am mimicking the same patterns and programming that my parents, and adults, used with me.
My nephews are much more aware as teenagers then I was. When I realized what I was doing, I apologized, and we talked about it. They used to tolerate my question but now if I slip I have 3 reminders that I don’t need to question their certainty.
